Portiragnes is overflowing with natural attractions, of which the best is the sandy
beach, flying the European Blue Flag, and the various aquatic activities, windsurfing academy and maintained beaches. Close by are vast nature reserves in the heart of the Natura 2000 network, such as the Roque-Haute National Nature Reserve, whose temporary ponds are home to a priceless biodiversity, including some extremely rare species [Have you heard of the aquatic fern?], or the site of La Grande Maïre, our corner of Camargue!
This vast, 400-hectare wetland brings together a patchwork of natural habitats (dunes, lagoons, salt marshes and reed beds) and an outstanding animal diversity, which can be discovered along 3 marked trails or on a guided tour every Wednesday evening in July and August. This site is populated with birds, and is an absolute must-see. Experience Occitan traditions linked to Camargue horses and bulls from Manade du Grand Salon.
Everything you need for a convivial and eco-friendly stay, on foot or by bike
The Portiragnes-Plage resort is ideal for relaxing and giving your car a break [too]. The cycle routes allow you to weave through the resort up to the beach, and walk along the banks of the Canal du Midi, under the sycamore trees. The Canal is also an ideal base to explore your surroundings, from lock to lock, on foot, by bike or boat hire
Charming, traditional Occitan villages
Marked out by the Canal du Midi, surrounded by vineyards and leaning against a hill, you will love wandering through the little streets of this typical Languedoc village, which centres around the twelfth-century church. At the Jean Saluste archaeological museum, discover the way of life and the activities of the first settlers here during the Palaeolithic era (800,000 years ago).
Festivals, spectacles, bullfighting and music
Summer at Portiragnes is definitely a party atmosphere. There is a series of varied activities for everyone to enjoy, ranging from Canalissimô, the festival of street art in June, up to the Festival du Vent, where the sky above the beach is covered with a thousand colours and characters.
