Formed during a volcanic eruption, 750,000 years ago, the mount is now a protected natural area where no car traffic is allowed.
With a height of 113 metres, it offers an exceptional view of the region. To the west, the view extends over the city of Agde to the lighthouses of Le Grau d'Agde and La Tamarissière, at the mouth of the Hérault. From the north flank, the view sweeps the Bagnas National Nature Reserve and farther away the Etang de Thau and Sète. To the south, there is a superb panorama of Le Cap d'Agde.
Two buildings stand on the mount : a semaphore and a crenellated tower called "Tour des Anglais" (Tower of the English). With the Brescou Fort, they are part of the old coast guard defences.
For a simple walk it is advisable to follow the footpath which encircles the whole mount. It goes through a lush environment of mediterranean plants (pine woods, maquis of evergreen oak, almond trees...), perfumed with garrigue.
The ADENA offers a geological approach to the Mont Saint-Loup through the knowledge of its volcanism : the volcanic history of the coast, the sub-soil, the natural landscape...
