The fishing and commercial port

Founded by the Phocaeans in the 5th Century BC, the fishing and commercial port reached the height of its activities in the 18th Century. Of these major port activities, fishing and boat-building are still carried on.

The district shows us how much Agde has remained tied to its maritime traditions. The mooring rings and nets along the basalt quaysides, the old records office (now the music school) and the typical fishermen?s houses in the Rue de la Poissonnerie all remind us that these are seafaring people. The many Madonnas placed in tabernacles around the district also show us the piety of the sailors and fishermen.

The statue of Amphitrita

The Navigation statue is in the middle of the Place Marine. Originally from Paris, it was offered to the town in 1937 and called Amphitrita, goddess of the sea. It faces out towards the Mediterranean and has become the symbol of Agde's maritime traditions.
