Fort Brescou is unique in the region: it is situated on the only volcanic island in the Golfe du Lion, 1 500 metres off the coast. Its defensive activity has been known since the middle ages. Built in 1586, then destroyed by orders of Louis the 13th, it was rebuilt from its ruins in 1680 from plans by Vauban. In the 18th century it became a state prison until 1851, the Protestants were imprisoned here after the dismissal of the Nantes edict as well as the rebels known as the ?libertines?.
Make the boat trip to the Fort, leaving from Cap d?Agde or Le Grau d'Agde.
